Online Blackjack

Online blackjack, also known as "21," is one of the most attractive casino games to play due to its simplicity and the narrow edge that the house has against the player. Playing online blackjack is not only fun, but you have a better chance to win money when compared to other casino games. The game involves hitting, staying, doubling down, splitting and taking insurance (this will be spelled out in the next section.)

The goal of online blackjack is to beat the dealer. To beat the dealer, your cards must be higher than the dealers without going over 21, or busting. Each numbered card has the same assigned value (i.e. a 5 is worth 5 points and an 8 is worth 8 points) while face cards and a 10s are worth 10 points apiece. An ace is either worth a 1 or 11 points.

The best way to beat the dealer is by being dealt blackjack. Blackjack is achieved when you are dealt an ace (which counts as either a 1 or 11) and a face card or a ten. This combination is the best possible outcome in online blackjack.

How To Play online blackjack

In the beginning of online blackjack, you are dealt two cards, both of which are dealt face up. The dealer has one card face up and one face down. From this point, you have the option to hit (draw another card) or stay (stand pat with your combination). If you hit and you do not bust, you have the option to draw another card or stay with your hand.

More advanced options include doubling down (drawing one card and one card only) or splitting -- a move that can only be made if you are drawn two cards of the same value (i.e. two 2s or two 8s.) If the dealer is showing an ace, you have the option to take insurance out on your hand (more on this strategy later.)

Blackjack Tips

To be an efficient online blackjack player, it's optimal to use basic strategy. This means that if the dealer is showing a face card or an ace and your hand totals 15 or fewer, it's wise to hit. If you draw 16, "the book" says you should hit as well. If you are drawn a 17 or above, basic strategy says you should stay.

If your two cards add up to 10 or 11, and the dealer is not showing a face card, basic strategy suggests you double down.

Another strategy that pays off in online blackjack is to double down when you are dealt an ace and the dealer is showing a low card (i.e. a 5 or a 6.)

Although insurance is an option when the dealer shows an ace, basic strategy says you should never use this move, as it is considered a "sucker bet." Now that you have the hang of online blackjack, give it a try!
